Erin’s Texture Journey
My name is Erin. My natural journey started in August 2005. My decision to be natural was an easy one. When I did get my hair relaxed it was only twice a year so in between the six month wait I was able to manage my own hair and thought hey why not just go fully natural. I let my hair grow out for the rest of the year and did my big chop the following year. Back in 2006 I didn’t have the many resources that are out and I wasn’t really embracing being natural like I do now. I just did the bare minimum and kept my hair washed and used whatever products were recommended to me by other people word of mouth. Let’s fast forward to 2011 where I met a lovely young lady through a mutual friend (Candice) named Ashlyn who helped me embrace being natural. She showed me videos gave me great hair advice and got me hooked on Kimmaytube ( I am addicted to her youtube channel by the way). I’ve always posted pictures of my hair and different styles and I always get asked questions about what products I use and how I do this or that. Even though there are tons of other bloggers and vloggers dealing with natural hair I would still like to share my journey.
Dedra’s Texture Journey
My name is Dedra , better known by my friends as Deej or Gucci. I began my natural journey in April of 2011. I became curious about natural hair through my friends Erin and Freda both of whom had been natural for quite some time. They encouraged me to start watching youtube videos mainly focusing on how to care for your hair in its natural state. My friends and family will tell you that I’ve always been the type to chop my hair off so this natural hair thing would really be a challenge for me, but I accepted the challenge at first with my goal mainly being how long could I go without perming or to be politically correct processing my hair. I will admit the first 3 months were rough (literally), but I did see a change in the texture and strength of my hair. So I began to focus less on how long I could go without processing my hair and started focusing on caring for my hair long term. This is where my 8 month transition period began. With the assist of youtube (shout out kimmaytube and 101ladyT) I learned how to manage and style my hair through this transition period. Perm and flexi rods became my best friend lol. My infatuation with wanting my hair to look like the ladies in the youtube videos increased along with my frustration with my still processed ends, thus resulting in my big chop in January of 2012. My initiation into the natural community had fully begun and I haven’t looked back since.
